Small bits of liver in a cat puzzle feeder at home

Updated

Liver treats for cat puzzle feeders are best as small crumbled bits tucked into the wells or slots, with the total counted as part of the cat's treat for the day. Stay nearby while the cat works it, as the bag says to supervise, and ask your veterinarian how much of your cat's diet can go to treats.

How small should liver be for a cat puzzle feeder?

Small enough to sit in a well or slide through a slot. That is the only test, and you can run it with the feeder in your hand before the cat is anywhere near it.

Our freeze-dried beef liver comes in medium sized pieces that break apart by hand. Crumble one before you load the puzzle, until you have flakes and small bits. We suggest liver for cats in small pieces, and a feeder with narrow slots makes that a practical need as well as a suggestion.

The bag is labeled and listed for dogs, which is why the crumbling is your job. If a bit is too big for the opening, break it again.

Where does the liver go in the puzzle?

Go in steps. Start easy, then make it harder.

  • Plain sight. Put bits in the shallowest wells or on the open surface, where the cat can reach them at once.
  • Deeper wells. Once the cat is working through the easy ones, move bits down into the deeper wells.
  • Covered slots and sliders. Last, load bits under covers or behind sliders, so the cat has to move a part to reach them.
  • Rolling balls. For a feeder that dispenses as it rolls, put only a few bits inside and leave the rest of the bag closed.

Set the difficulty yourself and change it if the cat is not getting anywhere. A feeder you already own is the one to start with.

How does puzzle liver fit the cat's share?

Count it before you load it. Decide how much liver the cat gets today, crumble that amount, and put all of it in the puzzle. The puzzle is the treat. It is not an extra on top of one.

That keeps the math honest. A feeder with many wells can swallow far more liver than you meant to use, because each well looks small. Fill only the wells you had planned for.

Cats are more susceptible than dogs to excess vitamin A, according to VCA Animal Hospitals {{src:https://vcahospitals.com/know-your-pet/vitamin-a-toxicosis-in-cats|2026-10-15}}, and our liver for cats page carries the detail. We give no cat quantity, since the treat figure we can cite is written for dogs.

Can you hide liver around the house for a cat?

You can, with a few rules. Put a few bits on low, reachable spots that you can see from where you stand: a step, a shelf, the top of a low cabinet. Keep the number small, and keep the spots within your view.

Pick up any bit you do not see eaten. A forgotten flake in a corner is a loose end, and you should know where all of them are when the game finishes. Then wash your hands; the back label prints: "WASH HANDS AFTER HANDLING".

If a dog lives in the house, play the hiding game with the dog out of the room. The game is just another way to hand over the same few flakes.

Single ingredient: beef liver, freeze-dried raw, from a Pennsylvania farm.

What cleanup does a liver puzzle need?

Wash the feeder as you would wash a food bowl. Do it after each use, before the next load goes in.

Then wash your hands, as the label asks. The same goes for any dish or counter that held the liver.

Keep the bag resealed and out of reach between games. Keep it in a cool, dry place, as the back label asks. Our own rule is to use an opened bag within 30 days, and the best by date is printed on the bag, one year from production.

If the household includes a dog, the dog's version of a find-the-liver game is in liver treats for snuffle mats. There are more serving ideas in the guides hub.

Questions

Can I leave my cat alone with a liver puzzle?

No. The bag says: "Always supervise while feeding and provide fresh drinking water." Load the puzzle while you are home, and stay in the room until the cat has finished or you take it away.

Can my dog use the same puzzle feeder?

Give each pet its own load and watch both. A dog's share is a different size from a cat's, and the dog's pieces are bigger. Clean the feeder between pets and keep them from working the same one at the same time.

Can I mix liver with my cat's dry food in the puzzle?

Yes. Put a few crumbled bits in with the cat's own dry food. Only the liver counts toward the treat share, not the dry food. Make no change to the usual meal beyond adding the flakes.

What if my cat gives up on the puzzle?

Make it easier. Put bits in plain sight, or use the shallowest wells, then work back up step by step. We do not read anything into a feeder that is left alone for a while.

Do whole liver pieces work in a cat puzzle?

Not as they come. The pieces are medium sized, and we suggest small pieces for a cat. Break them by hand until they fit the openings in your feeder, and break them smaller if they still do not.

Do I need to buy a puzzle feeder?

No. A muffin tin or an egg carton does the same job as a first puzzle, as long as you are watching closely the whole time. Do not leave it out afterward.
